Best Ways to Keep Pets Cool in Summer

Summer in Dubai can be tough on humans, and it’s even harder on our furry companions. Pets don’t sweat the way we do, so they’re at greater risk of overheating and heatstroke. Whether you have a playful dog, a lazy cat, or even small animals at home, it’s important to know how to keep them safe and comfortable during the hot months.

At TEEF Pet Services, we care for pets across Dubai every day through our dog walking, cat sitting, and pet sitting services — and we’ve learned what works best to help pets stay cool and happy in the heat.

Keep Walks Early or Late

Avoid taking your dog out in the middle of the day when the sun is strongest. Instead, schedule walks in the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower. Not only does this keep your pet safe, it also makes the walk more enjoyable.

Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

Hydration is key. Make sure water bowls are always full and placed in shaded, cool areas of your home. For dogs, consider adding a second bowl outdoors if they spend time in the garden.

Use Cooling Mats and Fans

Cooling mats, damp towels, or even fans can help regulate your pet’s body temperature. Some pet stores in Dubai even stock special cooling vests and pads designed for pets.

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar dangerously high within minutes. Leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle is one of the leading causes of heatstroke

.

Keep Indoors Comfortable

If possible, keep your home air-conditioned during peak summer hours. If that’s not always an option, provide shaded areas, tiled flooring, and fans where pets can rest.

Offer Frozen Treats

Pets love frozen goodies! Freeze pet-safe broth into ice cubes or stuff a toy like a Kong with treats and freeze it. It provides cooling relief and mental stimulation at the same time.

Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Early symptoms include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Red gums
  • Vomiting

If you notice these, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and contact a vet immediately.

Adjust Activity Levels

Limit vigorous play during peak heat hours. Instead, engage pets with indoor games and mental stimulation — puzzle feeders, training exercises, or gentle play in a shaded area.

Final Thoughts

Dubai summers are no joke, but with the right precautions, your pets can stay safe, happy, and cool. A mix of smart timing, hydration, and little tricks like frozen treats can make a world of difference.

And if your schedule makes it tricky to always be around, our pet sitting and dog walking services in Dubai ensure your pets get the care and exercise they need — without exposure to dangerous midday heat.
